Boston butt

Boston butt , or pork butt , is the American name for a cut of pork that comes from the upper part of the shoulder from the front leg and may contain the blade bone. Boston butt is the most common cut used for pulled pork, a staple of barbecue in the southern United States. A Boston butt , contrary to the way the name sounds, is actually a pork shoulder cut. This easy, no frills pork shoulder recipe is made with only a few additional ingredients, including your favorite homemade or store-bought barbecue sauce. And thought it came out pretty well.

I have done fake pulled pork with other cuts of pork, but pork butt (AKA pork shoulder) is the “right” cut. It’s easy to do and is the ultimate make-ahead meal. Our recipe makes pulled pork that’s tender, full of flavor, and juicy. It’s delicious served alone or add a bit of your favorite barbecue sauce.

This cut is the upper shoulder portion. It is sometimes labeled as a pork shoulder. Choose a Roast From Anywhere. One of the reasons pork is so versatile is that you can pick a roast from almost anywhere on the animal.


The tenderest are pork roasts cut from the loin, with or without the ribs attache but the sirloin, hind leg and shoulder all make fine roasts, as well. Pre-heat REC TEC grill to 225°F. Combine molasses and mustard and coat your Boston butt. Cook at 225°F for 7-hours until the meat reaches 165°F, then wrap tightly in layers of foil.


If you’re just starting out in your barbecue career, Boston butt is one of the best choices you can make for an impressive cut of meat that tastes amazing and is easy to manage on the grill.
