Structure of hair shaft

In the basic hair structure diagram above, you can see that the shaft has three layers: the cuticle ( outer layer ), cortex ( middle layer ) and medulla (inner layer). The medulla is a honeycomb keratin structure with air spaces inside. The hair root is the portion of the hair deep to the shaft that penetrates into the dermis, and sometimes into the subcutaneous layer. Hairs project beyond the surface of the skin almost everywhere except the sides and soles of the feet , the palms of the hands, the sides of the fingers and toes, the lips, and portions of the external genitalia. The part of the hair seen above the skin is called the hair shaft.

The root of each hair is located in a follicle, which is embedded in the skin and nourished by the blood vessels in the dermis (see diagram). The follicle is lined by inner and outer sheaths, which protect and shape the growing hair. Hair straighteners apply excessive heat to hair , and by doing so, break the microscopic scales on each hair shaft. Only found in terminal hair.
